Invisalign 101: What You Need to Know

Since introduced in 2002, Invisalign has changed the face (or teeth) of cosmetic dentistry. For many, traditional braces are unsightly and even more uncomfortable. Having metal discs and wires in your mouth for years doesn’t seem that appealing to many, which is where Invisalign comes into play.

Invisalign is a set of clear, removable retainers that gradually straighten your teeth. They are made of an FDA approved plastic free of BPA, BPS, latex, and gluten. These aligners are virtually invisible, so no one will even notice your wearing them- unless they look really closely.

How it works

Invisalign is a set of multiple removable retainers designed for every stage of the straightening process. Each plan is completely unique to each patient to ensure success- this is not a one size fits all treatment. Everyone’s smile is different so Invisalign aligners are made to adjust your specific tooth movements.

To receive a straighter smile as quickly as possible, it is recommended to wear the retainers between 20-22 hours per day. Your aligners will have to be changed about every 2-3 weeks depending on the severity of your treatment and you will need to have a checkup with your orthodontist every 6-8 weeks.

Since you are not required to wear them all day, you have time to remove the aligners while you eat and drink! We suppose you could eat with the aligners in place, but who wants spinach stuck in their teeth like with braces?

Numerous benefits from Invisalign treatment

The best advantage of Invisalign is that it makes the tooth straightening process essentially invisible to those around you. No more hiding behind braces! Invisalign allows you to feel confident in your own skin.

Other benefits include:

  • Easy to remove aligners while you eat, drink, brush, and floss
  • There are no wires or metal brackets, so you can straighten your teeth in comfort and style
  • Less visits to the dentist (but you can still stop by and say hi!)
  • Quicker results than traditional braces- the best cases have cut the time nearly in half
  • Made from safe, SmartTrack material to better control tooth movements

How much does it cost?

As much as we would like to tell you how inexpensive Invisalign treatment is, we cannot. The quality of these aligners cannot be match and the rate of successful outcomes increases daily. With that being said, Invisalign will cost about the same as tradition braces. Cost will vary greatly depending on the severity of your case.
