Teeth Whitening: Dos and Dont’s

You brush and (hopefully) floss twice a day, every day- that should be enough to keep your teeth sparkling white, right?Unfortunately, no. Every day you expose your teeth to acidic food and beverages that slowly yellow your teeth. Yellow or discolored teeth don’t necessarily mean unhealthy teeth- but Light Touch Dental can make your pearly whites sparkling again!

DIY Teeth Whitening

We are going to cut right to the chase here- do it yourself whitening is just too good to be true. You may save a few dollars, but you’ll be paying for it later. There are thousands of different DIY tips and tricks to whiten your teeth at home. The problem is that these hacks don’t consult a dentist beforehand. It’s true that some of these methods will whiten and brighten your smile, but they also erode your teeth.

Here is a common DIY tooth whitening method: “Mix 3 teaspoons of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Use the Q-tip or cotton ball and gently swab teeth. After 30 seconds, rinse with water and brush teeth.”

The main issue with this method is the lemon juice. Lemon juice is highly acidic and will weaken the layer of enamel on your teeth. The enamel acts as a layer of protection and is the hardest part of the tooth, but once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. We recommend anyone who uses this method to stop immediately.

LED Teeth Whitening Kits

These kits typically come with a whitening gel along with a portable LED light. The whitening gel is mainly composed of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide has been shown to deep clean and whiten teeth when exposed to heat and ultraviolet light.

The problem with LED kits is that the bulb omitting the light is simply an LED bulb that looks blue. There is absolutely no ultraviolet light or heat involved in the process, meaning the LED light has no ability to whiten teeth.More often than not, these kits are poorly made and will not give you the results promised.

Acidic and Staining Foods and Drinks

It’s impossible to completely cut out acidic and staining foods and drinks, and we won’t ask you to! After all, most of the staff at Light Touch Dental can’t go without a daily cup of coffee.

Not sure what could stain your teeth? Think of it this way. If it can stain your white shirt, it can stain your teeth. Avoid consuming a lot of dark foods and liquids like coffee, wine, dark sodas, and berries.

Acidic foods break down the enamel of your teeth, as we explained with the lemon juice DIY method. As the enamel of your teeth breaks down, your teeth will become more porous making them highly susceptible to stains. The most common acidic food is berries like blueberries or pomegranate seeds. Most likely, you’re exposing your teeth to acid through drinks like fruit juices, lemonade, carbonated water, and soda pop. Even squeezing lemon juice into your water is highly acidic! We recommend brushing your teeth directly after you consume one of these types of beverages.
